| | | The Charter for Care Leavers was published by the Department for Education and launched by the Children's Minister during National Care Leavers’ Week 2012. The Charter is a statement of the values and principles that should underpin the actions and decisions of all professionals who have a remit to work with care leavers. The Charter for Care Leavers embodies a set of over-arching principles that are designed to improve the experiences of care leavers throughout preparation, transition and on their journeys into adult life. The Charter was developed and written by a group of care leavers brought together by the Care Leavers' Foundation, endorsed by the Children’s Minister and published by the Department for Education during National Care Leavers' Week 2012.
The thinking and principles embedded in the Charter, created in partneship with the Department for Education, has now been fully embedded in the new Care Leavers' Covenant announced by the Minister in 2016.
lt calls for a number of simple principles to be embedded in all services and policies which affect care leavers: respect us, listen to us, work with us, believe in us and hold aspirations for us, make sure we have somewhere we can call home and don't forget about us. Presented as a set of promises from Central Government, the hope is that all Local Authorities will eventually sign up to the Charter and use it as a checklist or ‘conscience’ alongside their local Pledge, whenever they are making decisions or reviewing policies which affect care leavers. View the Charter for Care Leavers Although primarily aimed at Local Authorities, the Charter for Care Leavers is a document that any agency, provider or organisation can sign up to. A list of those who have signed up to the Charter will be published on this website prior to National Care Leavers' Week 2013. Group member Scott King produced a video to support the principles of the Charter which can be viewed on YouTube |
